The Dragon Boat Festival, a traditional holiday imbued with rich cultural significance, symbolizes heartfelt sentiments and warmth through the profound meaning of rice dumplings. As the festival approaches, Daren Lifestyle Association organized the “Warmth of Dragon Boat Festival, Charity Rice Dumpling Sale” event in Auckland, which received enthusiastic responses and active participation from Daren volunteers. The atmosphere at the scene was warm, harmonious, and filled with the thick festive ambiance and a sense of family-like humanity.
Adhering to the principle of “people first,” volunteers demonstrated their dedication in every aspect of the event, from selecting and preparing materials, making rice dumplings, to coordinating and understanding each other’s roles.
In order to select the finest and freshest ingredients, the day before the event, Daren volunteers set off early to purchase materials for making fragrant rice dumplings. The deliciousness and tenderness of the rice dumplings are inseparable from meticulous preparation. Every step, from selecting and soaking the glutinous rice, to considering the fat-to-lean ratio and weight of each piece of meat, to determining the proportion of seasoning, to washing and handling the bamboo leaves, was treated with care and strict control. Volunteers spared no effort, working tirelessly through the night to create the perfect taste of home.
On the day of the event, Daren volunteers arrived at the venue on time and began their tasks according to the prearranged plan. Wearing aprons, food-grade gloves, and chef hats, their focused and earnest expressions could be seen through their masks. With the accompaniment of graceful melodies, the verdant bamboo leaves gracefully unfolded and folded in the nimble hands of the volunteers. After a few simple yet skillful motions, a genuine and flavorful rice dumpling was born! Following the weighing process, the appropriately sized dumplings were selected and ready for cooking!
With the volunteers responsible for cooking the rice dumplings ready, one by one, the robust and plump dumplings eagerly plunged into the boiling water, bobbing up and down in the rolling waves. The sweet fragrance of the bamboo leaves became increasingly intense as they floated in the air. Although the process of cooking rice dumplings may seem simple, achieving the perfect heat and cooking time requires precision. Through the fierce flames and gentle simmering, the freshness of the ingredients, the softness of the glutinous rice, and the fragrance of the bamboo leaves melded seamlessly, enticing anyone nearby to sneak a taste.
During lunchtime, the thoughtful Daren volunteers lovingly prepared delicious dumplings and shared their homemade specialties. After a busy morning, the volunteers gathered around, enjoying the delicacies while chatting about daily life. They felt a deep sense of closeness and resonance, experiencing the care and warmth that felt akin to family among each other.
Watching each fragrant rice dumpling take shape in their hands, being cooked in the pot, packaged, and transported, it’s as if they are green angels carrying blessings of goodwill.
The volunteers felt greatly rewarded, not only gaining a sense of achievement and learning a new skill that adds flavor to their family meals, but also making many new friends.

As the two-day event comes to a close, through their coordination and communication while making rice dumplings, Daren volunteers deepened their understanding of each other and experienced the happiness of Daren Life.
